چکیده

A survey of commercial egg laying facilities in 1991 indicated that more than 70% of the laying hens in the U.S. were maintained in controlled environment housing and by the year 2000, this would exceed 82%. The survey also concluded that by the turn of the century, more than 38% of these houses would be cooled with either foggers or evaporative cooling systems. Since this survey was conducted, practically all new housing built in the U.S. has been of the controlled environment type (ref. #l).

Microbial and antibiotic resistant constituents associated with biological aerosols and poultry litter within a commercial poultry house.

Poultry are known to harbor antibiotic resistant and pathogenic bacteria, and as such poultry litter and poultry house air can be contaminated with these bacteria. However, the presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in biological aerosols and litter is largely not understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the amount of aerosolized bacteria and endotoxin, particularly fecal indic...

Seasonal dynamics of mycoplasmal conjunctivitis in eastern North American house finches

The hallmark signs of infection have allowed systematic monitoring of disease at both local and continent-wide scales for more than 7 years since the onset of the epidemic. 2. Using data col...

Association of Campylobacter spp. levels between chicken grow-out environmental samples and processed carcasses.

Campylobacter spp. have been isolated from live poultry, production environments, processing facilities, and raw poultry products. Environmental sampling in a poultry grow-out house, combined with carcass rinse sampling from the same flock, may provide a relative relationship between pre- and postharvest Campylobacter contamination. Air samples, fecal/litter samples, and feed/drink line samples...

House-level risk factors associated with the colonization of broiler flocks with Campylobacter spp. in Iceland, 2001 – 2004

BACKGROUND The concurrent rise in consumption of fresh chicken meat and human campylobacteriosis in the late 1990's in Iceland led to a longitudinal study of the poultry industry to identify the means to decrease the frequency of broiler flock colonization with Campylobacter. Because horizontal transmission from the environment is thought to be the most likely source of Campylobacter to broiler...
